Behind the Image: Ben Yew finding calmness in the storm

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Part of Edition365 2022 – Ben Yew’s image aims to capture your attention and allow you to pause, take a breath and tune in.

The concept behind this photograph was inspired by the desire to showcase a diamond bracelet in a creative and artistic way, targeting a bold and risk-taking audience through a men’s investor’s magazine.

“I name this image “The Prayer” because, just like in life, we can take as much calculative risk as possible, but there is an element of luck involved in high-risk trade, that is when you do your best, let go and let god. Find the calmness in the storm perhaps.”

The idea behind the shot was to capture attention and generate an effective impact – to have viewers pause and tune in to the deeper story behind the image. Yew wanted to portray the “interesting” side of the diamond trade, highlighting the competitiveness and perhaps even a hint of the darker side of the industry.

The location and setting played a significant role in the final image. Yew spent time searching for a dark setting to contrast with the brightness of the diamond. He found the perfect dark wooden backdrop from the staircase of a heritage building and paired it with a sharp dark brown suit to make the diamond stand out.

The photoshoot presented some challenges, including limited time and space at the staircase location. Yew was able to make the most of the situation, using only one light to bring his vision to life. He believes in pushing boundaries and taking risks to create something different, and this is reflected in his art.

As a destination fine art photographer, Yew has traveled all over the world capturing special moments for his clients. His work has been featured in numerous publications and he has won numerous awards for his artistry and technical skills. You can find his artist website here.

Blockchain technology and the use of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) have had a significant impact on the art world and Yew’s work as an artist. These innovations have opened up new opportunities for artists, and Yew believes it is important to adapt and learn quickly in order to stay relevant in the constantly evolving world.

Ben Yew’s image has been selected for Edition365 2022, culminating in an immersive virtual exhibition of works documenting the events between 1st October 2021 and 30th September 2022.
